In the reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, there are so many type and generations of coins started from bronze and coins tin badge emblem in A.D. 1950 (B.E. 2493).

In A.D. 1972 (B.E. 2515) , the five baht coins is produced for the first time with a nine-sided flat coin but was canceled because of so much counterfeit. The production rise again in A.D. 1977 (B.E. 2520) as round coins filled with copper. Thailand have produced circulation and commemorative coins including commemorative medal coins until now.

Type of coins:

1. The Circulated Coins

The circulated Coins are coins that circulated in common everyday with nine kinds of prices:

  • 10, 5, 2 and 1 baht
  • 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 satang

but there are six kinds of prices in the economy now that are

  • 10, 5, 2 and 1 baht
  • 50, 25 satang

2. Commemorative coins

Commemorative coins are produced for the important occasions such as the king’s sixth round Birthday December 5, 1999 (B.E. 2542),  by making two types of polishing and unpolishing.

The difference between the circulated and commemorative coin is the pattern placed on the front and back:

  • The circulated coin has the American Turning pattern which must be flipped vertically to see the pattern on the back.
  • The commemorative coin has the European Turning pattern which must be flipped horizontally to see the pattern on the back.

3. Commemorative Medal coins

Commemorative Medal coins made on the occasion and opportunity areas. This is different from the commemorative coin by it has no price on the medal due to it is not money and can not be used as legal payment.
